Forsters Tern

Diamondback Terrapins

  Diamondback Terrapins

The Diamondback Terrapin, Malaclemys terrapin, is the only species of turtle in North America that spends its time in brackish water. The species ranges from Cape Cod to western Texas including the Florida Keys, inhabiting tidal marshes, estuaries and creeks. Many terrapins drown in eel and crab pots. Other threats include destruction of nesting beaches and predation by raccoons. I found this trio at low tide on the mudflats at Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey. This image won third place for wildlife photography at the 2008 Wings ‘n Water Festival, Stone Harbor, New Jersey.
